Exploring...Options

NASA continues to trouble shoot the faulty sensor that prompted a delay in the launch last week. Judging from this article, it appears that NASA is even willing to bend a few of its rules to get Discovery launched before the launch window closes.

Well, saying they're willing to bend the rules presents what's going on in an arguably unfair light, and is a bit simplistic.

It's not really so much that they're looking at breaking the four-of-four rule, but rather considering whether it should be changed.

The Shuttle program started with a three-of-four rule for the ECO sensors, meaning that Discovery now would meet the original safety requirements.

The four-of-four rule was established later in response to a specific problem. That problem, however, has since been corrected, thus eliminating the original rationale for the rule. Since that problem no longer exists, there's less reason not to go back to the original three-of-four safety standard, which would allow the launch.
